A 1-0 victory for Derby County against West Ham on Monday afternoon has confirmed Manchester United under-23s’ relegation from Premier League 2 Division One.
Ricky Sbragia’s side have had a woeful season in Division One, winning just four games of the 21 played thus far.
They’ve looked devoid of a game plan frequently. Many have commented that there is not enough quality in the side, and that is true to an extent. However, with the side that Man United do have, the team should have performed better.
Results mean very little in youth football, as Southampton will attest as one of the best producers of academy products who make the first team but sitting in Division Two. United will join them.
The key issue, though, is that the next generation at United is one of the most talented the club has seen for years. The under-18s were crowned as champions of the Northern Division last weekend after a win against Manchester City. They will now miss out on games against the best opposition because of this woeful season.
