Manchester United have been crowned U18 Premier League North champions after a 2-1 victory in the Manchester derby on Saturday lunchtime.
The Reds needed just one point from their final two games, against City and then Liverpool next week, to complete a title-winning season.
Nishan Burkart got Kieran McKenna’s side off to a fantastic start with a cool finish in the 9th-minute after a long ball split the Man City defence.
Ethan Galbraith doubled United’s lead with a superb strike for his first goal at this level. After some typically wonderful, intricate play between Dylan Levitt, Mason Greenwood and James Garner, the clearance fell to Galbraith who struck it perfectly into the bottom-left corner from 25 yards.
Just 98 seconds later, United were quickly brought back down to earth as Brandon Williams headed the ball into his own net after a City corner. The pressure from the visitors continued to build from then.
United held out, though, at Leigh Sports Village, despite a couple of nervous moments.
It’s been a wonderful campaign for United. The Reds have scored in every league game this season, and have scored four or more goals on eight occasions, netting six on four occasions.
United have played wonderful football, but have, at times, scraped out results during periods where injuries and fixtures built up.
Mason Greenwood will likely finish as top goalscorer, with only one game remaining, but it is Nishan Burkart who has contributed to the second most goals, scoring 11 himself and assisting a further 10.
