After returning from a pre-season training camp in Austria, Ricky Sbragia guided his new under-23s side to a 2-2 draw against National League side Salford City, thanks to two second half goals.
Sbragia managed the Reds in a friendly in Austria, but has recently returned to the role after 12 years away.
Two quickfire first half goals from Lois Maynard and Scott Burton took the home side into a comfortable lead just after the half-hour mark.
In the lashing rain, conditions were difficult, for goalkeepers particularly. Substitute Callum Gribbin took United back into the game with a long-range shot that squeezed through the hands of Salford goalkeeper Tony Aghayere. After that game, Gribbin tweeted: “Very lucky to get a goal myself.”
With less than 10 minutes of normal time remaining, two more substitutes combined to draw the game level. DJ Buffonge found Charlie Scott from the left flank and the infrequently used player of last season found the net superbly.
