19-year-old Welsh centre-back Regan Poole is set to join League One side Northampton Town on loan for the 2017/18 season, according to HITC Sport.

Poole joined United from Newport County aged 17, having played in the Football League on numerous occasions. He made his United debut in last season’s 5-1 victory against FC Midtjylland as a substitute in added time.

Unlikely to play first team football next season with Victor Lindelöf, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Axel Tuanzebe all ahead of him, Poole will benefit from a full season of football at a high level.

The Wales under-20 international won’t struggle to deal with the challenges of the Football League having made 15 appearances for Newport in League Two.

Poole captained United at the Dallas Cup this year.
