Real Salt Lake 1-3 Man United
Scorer(s): Erik Virgen – Josh Bohui, Matthew Olosunde, Callum Gribbin
Man Utd XI: Richardson, Tanner, Warren, Poole, Olosunde, Whelan, Hamilton, Dearnley, Barlow, Gribbin, Bohui.
After heavy opening day defeat, there were heavy storms in Dallas on Monday night, but the under-19s’ fixture against Real Salt Lake eventually went ahead after delays, with a duo of second half goals giving Man United a crucial win.
Unlike in the 4-1 loss to Chivas, Tommy Martin’s side looked fresh and dominated the first half. Ethan Hamilton almost took the Reds in front after just nine minutes having been fed through by Aidan Barlow.
Josh Bohui took United in front after 27 minutes, tapping home into an empty net after Jared Osgood had missed a fast-paced corner delivery of Callum Gribbin’s.
Real Salt Lake came out of half-time looking a different side, with more urgency and directness. It came off immediately as Erik Virgen started and finished a move, combining with Marco Gonzalez before finishing from the latter’s cross.
RSL continued to attack with intent, and had control of the game, looking the much more threatening side. Theo Richardson was tested on a number of occasions by Milan Iloski, including from a free-kick.
Matthew Olosunde, who came to United from America and the New York Red Bulls, was one of the most impressive players on the pitch, in both attack and defence, and gave United the lead again against the run of play. He moved effortlessly past the RSL defence before slotting home past Osgood.
Callum Gribbin secured the win for United with a delightful chip over Osgood after intercepting a stray pass from RSL in their own half. That did come after, however, continued pressure from the American side.
Man Utd now face Brazilian side Coritiba on Wednesday night at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, with the game kicking off at 1:30AM on Thursday morning for viewers in the United Kingdom.
