After keeping a sixth cleansheet in seven games for Aston Villa, Sam Johnstone was singled out for praise by Villains boss and former-Red Steve Bruce.

Johnstone had a tough start to his loan at Villa Park but has since excelled. He started against Norwich City on Saturday and grabbed an assist with a long goalkick.

“We all knew he was a top class goalkeeper and he’s looking the part now,” Bruce said.

“He’s had a wonderful few weeks and that’s obviously helped the whole team. His presence at the moment has given everybody that confidence that we can keep a clean sheet.

“He’s starting to look the part as everyone told me he was. He’s a diamond. He’s first in and last out at the training ground.”

Bruce also revealed that Villa goalkeeping coach Gary Walsh told him, ‘take him, he’s the best young goalkeeper in the country.’

He went on to discuss Johnstone’s future. He was Bruce’s first signing as Villa manager in January, and he told reporters, “I will speak to Mourinho when he has five minutes.”
